Women Entrepreneurs of Khervadi Village
25th Oct 2024
In the quaint village of Khervadi, Gujarat, three determined women shared a dream. They wanted to improve their lives and not put up with the hardships of labour work.
When they joined the Promoting Favourable Ecosystem and Nutrition for Entrepreneurship programmes in Vadodara district of Gujarat, the Mukul Madhav Foundation (MMF) helped them with knowledge and support. And, these women found the guidance they needed to turn their lives around.
For years, they had to toil as labourers under harsh conditions. On one hand, their efforts often went unrecognised, and on the other, they received minimum wage. Despite working hard, they struggled to provide for their families. The transition to entrepreneurship wasn’t without its difficulties, either. They faced scepticism from their families and the market uncertainty made it challenging to handle business responsibilities as smoothly as they could handle household duties.
They started a small food business with only one offering: dal-pulav. Our volunteers monitored them closely and guided them in choosing a product they were familiar with to start the business. Their confidence grew, and their shared challenges brought them closer as business partners. With growing demand and the women understanding their market, they expanded their menu to include more popular items. They now also serve their customers tea, puri, chole, and bhajiya. We went back to check their progress and found them discussing consumer preferences and stock shelf life! The business has quickly become a thriving enterprise. It provides them a steady income beyond what they earned from manual labour.
These ladies are now entrepreneurs. They work together to run a food business that has significantly improved their financial situation. They have each other’s backs as well when it comes to working at the stall. When one has to maintain her family, the other heads the stall. This business venture has boosted their self-esteem and standing in the community, and MMF volunteers are proud to note their growth.
Since we want to help them achieve the best outcome for their business, we’re in touch with partners who can decorate the stall in an aesthetic manner.
