The sound of life
Vaishnavi's Journey
2nd Aug 2024
Is there anything more powerful than a child’s determination? Vaishnavi, a 13-year-old girl from Belgaum in Karnataka, certainly proves there isn’t. Born prematurely on 22nd October 2010, weighing just 2 kg, Vaishnavi faced severe hearing problems from a young age. Yet, despite these challenges, she shines brightly in the 7th standard at GHPS Belgaum.
Vaishnavi’s parents first noticed her hearing problems at three years old. Although she reached her developmental milestones, her hearing impairment made communication and participation in school difficult. She could express only a few words and was often irregular in attending classes, making her educational journey a challenging one.
When the team at Mukul Madhav Foundation (MMF) first met Vaishnavi at a medical camp, we knew she could be helped. We conducted a thorough assessment and developed an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and an Individual Rehabilitation Plan (IRP) tailored just for her. We started by providing her with hearing aids and speech and language therapy. Through a combination of sign language and speech therapy, her communication skills began to blossom.
Seeing Vaishnavi’s transformation has been incredibly rewarding. She is now more regular in school and excels in arts, crafts, and outdoor games. She wants to become a teacher, a dream nurtured by her progress and the support of her mentors.
Her parents are counselled and informed about the various government facilities and social security schemes available to them, such as the UDID card, disability pension, and scholarships. Vaishnavi takes special skills training in sign language and participates in peer group sessions to be able to identify letters, words, and numbers more effectively. Her journey speaks volumes of what can be achieved with the right support and determination.
