Sunita’s Makeover: From Illiteracy to Entrepreneurship
18th Oct 2024
33-year-old Sunita Devi from Murwal village in the Banda district of Uttar Pradesh has shown how education and determination can change a life. Married young to Ramnarayan, a farmer, Sunita faced the daunting challenge of raising five children while grappling with illiteracy.
The Women Literacy Centre running in her village offered functional literacy to women. It became Sunita’s sanctuary. She enrolled, finding a supportive community and a compassionate teacher who nurtured her passion for learning. The centre provided her with essential reading, writing, and numeracy skills, alongside crucial knowledge about health, hygiene, and nutrition.
It opened doors she had never imagined. She joined a self-help group, discovering the importance of saving and financial independence. Her journey didn’t stop there. Mukul Madhav Foundation was running the Bundelkhand Entrepreneurship Development Project when she contacted us. She was eager to set up her own business but did not know how to go about it.
With a loan and training in the project, Sunita courageously opened a grocery store in her village. Her business quickly flourished, surpassing her husband’s income from farming and transforming her into a ray of hope for her community.
This story clearly shows the importance of education in rural areas and the power of programmes for rural development in India. At Mukul Madhav Foundation, we are proud to support individuals like Sunita, witnessing their journey from illiteracy to entrepreneurship. Her story is evidence of the potential unlocked through rural development initiatives. Sunita’s journey inspires countless women in her village, proving that dreams can become reality with education, determination, and the right support
