Shitalben and Anjanaben: A Culinary Success Story
24th Oct 2024

The village of Sedal, Gujarat, has seen an unlikely duo succeed as entrepreneurs. Shitalben and Anjanaben, two women who once relied on manual labour to get by, have changed the meaning of entrepreneurship with their grit and hard work.
Our volunteers met them when Mukul Madhav Foundation (MMF) was running the Promoting Favourable Ecosystem and Nutrition for Entrepreneurship projects in Vadodara. We have been pursuing opportunities to help promote women entrepreneurship and create employment opportunities within vulnerable communities for a while.
When we met them, their enthusiasm was evident. They talked for hours without missing a beat and already had plans and business execution strategies. They wanted to take up an opportunity for skill development to mix their culinary expertise with traditional recipes. It was their dream to set up their food business near a school. They believed manual labour was respectable but an unsustainable way of making money. And that made us realise that they were up for a good hustle.
With minimal support, the duo began selling samosas, corn, wafers, and cutlery. Their offerings quickly became popular among schoolchildren and residents, and daily earnings soared by the month.
Shitalben and Anjanaben were no longer undertaking manual labour. They have found independence in their enterprise. Their stall is filled with laughter and conversations every day. Their bond is growing stronger with their business. Their financial freedom has allowed them to support their families and make small but promising investments for their future.
Their success has brought hope to their community, and faith within the community in rural development programmes. Shitalben and Anjanaben often share their journeys with exciting stories of growth and learning. Perseverance and collaboration are often at the heart of these stories of rural development in India. They are not just selling snacks but cultivating a supportive environment for other aspiring entrepreneurs.
Committed to helping Anjanaben and Shitalben to reach the highest of highs, we’re in talks with partners who can help us renovate the stall in the best way possible.
