Plumbing Skills Training at Vadodara Central Jail
4th Dec 2024
Mukul Madhav Foundation partnered with United Way of Baroda, Gujrat, to introduce a plumbing skills training programme at Vadodara Central Jail. Our goal here was to create opportunities for growth for inmates. One of the most inspiring stories to emerge from this initiative is that of Ravi (name changed).
Since his incarceration in 2019, Ravi has sought every chance to improve himself. Whether it was through yoga, meditation, or courses in psychology and cooking. He made the most of what was available in his restricted settings with a dream of never returning to jail after serving his time. The plumbing training programme was a way for him to prepare for life after prison.
United Way’s programme coordinator, Pankaj Sir, led the sessions. During the deliberations for the course design, it was decided that the aim would be to help inmates learn technical skills, but subtly, they would also be taught how to stay disciplined and build confidence. According to those who have worked closely with inmates, recidivism is much lower when these elements are combined into training sessions. This training brought theoretical and practical components together, helping every participant build a strong foundation.
Mukul Madhav Foundation’s role was to ensure the programme had the resources and structure needed to succeed. Our volunteers worked with trainers and participants to address challenges and encourage progress. We held activities like creating plumbing-related posters to keep motivation up. It added a creative element to the sessions. Ravi’s vibrant designs now decorate the classroom walls. His focus and creativity are both well-received. Through this training, Ravi has gained more than just plumbing skills. He has rediscovered his sense of purpose. For him and many others, this programme represents a second chance that can change their lives.
