Our 10th Free Medical camp took place from the 25th of June till the 29th of June 2013. We had specialists from prominent hospitals in Pune, such as K.E.M Hospital, Bharati Hospital and H.V Desai Eye Hospital, as well as four local General Physicians participating in this camp. Participating schools were Swaroop Anand Vidya Mandir School – Pawas, Phansop High School – Phansop, Mukul Madhav Vidyalaya and two new schools which we have taken under our umbrella; G.M Shetye High School, Basani and Shreemant Vijaysinghraje Patwardhan, Kotawade.
At this year’s camp, 2804 students were screened by Dentists, Ophthalmic and General Physicians. It was noted that oral hygiene negligence was high amongst most of the children. There were a few cases of malnourishment and anaemia. Most of the children were diagnosed as suffering from skin diseases due to unhygienic conditions. Approximately a hundred and thirty three children have been prescribed spectacles and another twenty six have been referred for eye investigation or surgery. There were two special cases from Swaroop Anand Vidya Mandir School – Pawas. Mast. Vijay Bhatkar; 14 years of age is suffering from VSD Closure. The doctors have suggested a 2. D. Echo Test. Ms. Dhanshree More; 15 years of age has stunted growth.
Our representative at Ratnagiri is coordinating with the dental department of local hospitals to find out if they are willing to treat the children for scaling and cleaning and will also refer the case of Ms. Dhanshree More to a gynaecologist and Mast. Vijay Bhatkar to a cardiologist. Our team in Pune is in touch with the skin specialists from K.E.M Hospital to find a solution to combat the skin problems found amongst these children. We are also providing spectacles to those children who require it.
Another important feature of our camp was introducing the Rubella Vaccine to girl students. German measles (Rubella) is usually a mild disease consisting of fever and a rash; but it can cause birth defects. It has been observed that around 40-45% of women in the childbearing age are susceptible to Rubella. This may result in miscarriage, foetal death or congenital defects known as Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS). Timely immunisation before pregnancy against Rubella can save the new-born child from congenital deformities such as blindness, deafness, and retarded mental growth and heart problems. This vaccination has been recommended for girls as they grow of age. Due to the personal generous donation of Mr. Adar Poonawalla of Serum Institute Pune and the Rotary Club Pune through K.E.M Hospital, we were given 1200 vaccines out of which we were able to immunise one hundred and twelve girl children. We are hoping to immunise another thousand by the end of this month, after receiving consents from their parents.
