Empowering Kolli Hills: A Sustainable Path to Livelihood
7th Mar 2025

In the heart of Kolli Hills, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu, a transformative initiative was launched in 2023 to uplift tribal women and youth. Mukul Madhav Foundation, in collaboration with the Centre for Rural Development, launched this NGO livelihood program.
A detailed survey and need assessment was conducted before the program’s launch. It gave us a clear indication about the limited income opportunities for women and the lack of formal training that hindered employment. It also revealed the potential of value-added businesses using native fruits. We were looking at all opportunities that could be pursued to help the local people in the most optimised manner.
After the challenges were enumerated, a skill development program was introduced to create a sustainable livelihood program. A tailoring training was provided to 300 tribal women. Immediately, it helped them start their own businesses or secure jobs in garment industries. Simultaneously, 80 tribal youth completed computer literacy training. It gave them some digital skills for better career prospects.
To ensure credibility, Mukul Madhav Foundation and its partners registered the centre with the Skill Development Authority of India. So we can now offer certified training that will increase employment opportunities. Over time, this initiative has become self-sustaining. It operates independently even though minimal fees collected from participants. This model ensures that future batches continue to benefit from the program. Looking ahead, Mukul Madhav Foundation aims to expand the training modules and introduce new economic opportunities to further strengthen the Kolli Hills tribal community.
