Bhimabhai Vasava’s Journey: From Farm Labour to Freedom
11th Nov 2024
Farm labour traps its victims. It’s unforgiving and the cycle never ends for people like Bhimabhai Vasava who endured it for 25 years. The work was back-breaking and the hours were long and endless with little to show for it. Freedom was a distant dream but Bhimabhai held onto hope. He clung to the belief that a different life may be possible.
That hope took shape when he encountered Mukul Madhav Foundation (MMF) through the Promoting Favourable Ecosystem and Nutrition for Entrepreneurship Led by Women and Youth from Tribal Families programme run Finolex Industries Limited (FIL). MMF was a guiding presence in his journey. Our volunteers encouraged him to open the door to freedom that Bhimabhai hadn’t dared to imagine. With their support, he pursued something entirely his own – a vegetable business.
Now, his days begin with a purpose. He wakes up early every day and prepares his cart to sell fresh vegetables at nearby villages. His working hours begin from 8 AM to 11 AM and from 3 PM to 6 PM. Unlike in the past, his time is his own. His hard work directly benefits his family. Through his efforts, Bhimabhai earns between Rs. 200 to 300 daily. It is a modest sum but one that allows him to stand tall with dignity.
Bhimabhai’s business is sustainable and has given him the chance to save, a luxury he never had before. Free from the shackles of labour work, he is finally building a future for himself. The journey has been challenging, but his determination shines brighter with each day. Bhimabhai’s ambitions have taken centre stage, proving that courage can rewrite one’s destiny. He is an inspiring example for others in his community.
