Aarti Devi’s Journey towards Entrepreneurship
18th Oct 2024
In the remote village of Churehkesaruwa, nestled in Chitrakoot district in Uttar Pradesh, lives a remarkable 30-year-old woman, Aarti Devi. Her story is one of strength and determination, defying the odds many women in rural India face.
Women in rural areas, especially in remote villages, often face limited opportunities due to social and economic constraints. Aarti’s village is one such place where traditional roles and limited access to resources often hinder women’s growth. However, Aarti’s journey is a shining example of how grabbing the right support can transform lives.
A women’s literacy programme in Aarti’s village aimed to teach women how to read and write. Aarti eagerly joined the class. Each day, she immersed herself in learning, progressing not just in literacy but also in self-belief. Aarti drew inspiration from the learnings she received here.
Mukul Madhav Foundation’s management team met her at a farmer’s fair under the Bundelkhand Entrepreneurship Development Project. This programme for rural development in India taught Aarti essential business skills, from managing finances to marketing her products. She learned the importance of adaptability and that setbacks are part of the journey to success. Our volunteers mentored her extensively, and a spark ignited within her—the dream of becoming an entrepreneur.
With support from her husband, Krishna Nand Kumar, Aarti decided to chase her dreams. Together, they opened a small shop in Manikpur. Aarti made delicious samosas, while Krishna sold tasty chaat. The initial days were challenging, filled with uncertainty and hard work, but Aarti’s determination remained steadfast.
When the samosa business did not flourish as expected, Aarti pivoted, drawing on the confidence and skills she had gained from her training with us. She decided to open a cosmetic store instead. Day by day, her confidence grew as she witnessed her hard work bear fruit. Today, Aarti’s store earns more than what her husband makes and serves as an inspiration to other women in the village. Her success is a shining example of the positive impact of entrepreneurship in rural areas.
